How to choose the correct head gasket for my Yanmar 6LP 24-valve marine diesel engine?
The Yanmar 6LP series has gaskets with notches. 1 notch means Mark I, 3 notches is a Mark III gasket, and finally, 5 notches is a Mark V. Each grade represents a different thickness. The thickness of a newly installed cylinder head gasket is:
MK “1”: 0.85mm to 0.95mm,
MK “3”: 0.95mm to 1.05mm,
MK “5”: 1.05mm to 1.15mm. -
What is the tightening torque and sequence of the cylinder head bolts of the Yanmar 6LP (24-valve) marine diesel?
Before installation, some oil has to be applied to the bolt’s thread and the cylinder head bolt seat. The 26 cylinder head bolts should be tightened several times, in the order shown on the illustration. The tightening torque of the cylinder head bolts is 700 kgf·cm (68.65 Nm).
Please note that A bolts are 121.50mm while B bolts are 133.50mm.
In case a cylinder head bolt does not satisfy the specified torque, replace that bolt. Mark the front side of each cylinder head bolt with paint. Retighten the cylinder head bolts by 90°, following the order shown in the illustration. Retighten the bolts further by 90°. Check that the painted marks face rearwards.
