The history of the engines built for saildrive systems technically starts in 1958, when the first MD1 engine was introduced. The timeline evolves as follows:


  • In 1970, the MD1 was replaced by the larger bore, MD1B. The family included the MD1B (1-cyl), the MD2B (2-cyl), and the MD3B (3-cyl). Their production was ceased in 1975, passing the torch to the next generation.
  • In 1975, the MD2B and the MD3B were facelifted into their improved versions, MD11C, and MD17C. Technically, the same engines with cylinder liners.Their production ended in 1984.
  • In 1984, the MD11D and the MD17D were replaced by the new-then 2000-series. The 2001 was also introduced, to fill the missing gap of the single-cylinder engine. This engine family was produced until 1993. The 2000-series was the last “original” Volvo Penta compact engine. Between 1993 and 2005, the new MD-series was introduced. The line-up included the MD2010 (2-cyl), and the 3-cylinder MD2020, MD2030, and MD2040. The whole family is Perkins-based.
  • In 2005, Volvo Penta introduced the latest family of small, compact engines. Once again, the engines are Perkins as a core. The family is made of the D1 and the D2 series, and they are very refined, in order to reduce noise, and achieve stricter environmental restrictions. Their latest variations, letter code “F”, meet the tier compliances EU RCD Stage II and US EPA Tier 3, and in 2026, they are still in production. 20 plus years, maybe it is time for a new line-up, isn’t it?

Although the latest compact engines are more environmentally friendly, they are not as sturdy as their predecessors. On one hand, this is explainable, since the newer engines are more complex and refined, newer technology is involved, and higher horsepower and torque achieved. On the other hand, these engines are plagued by some serious issues of corrosion, elbow clogging, overheating, and air in the fuel system. For example, the heat exchanger unit and exhaust manifold of the D2-55 engine, is made of aluminum (picture on your left). At the same time, the core is mainly brass, and to make things worse, the exhaust elbow is made of ductile iron. Guess what, the whole cooling unit acts as an anode for the exhaust elbow. At the same time, the elbow becomes clogged due to corrosion and carbon clogging.


Consequently, the contact area of the cooler X elbow becomes corroded. To make things worse, the studs that hold up the elbow onto the manifold are made of steel. Hopefully, some aftermarket companies have redesigned these exhaust systems, and introduced stainless steel elbows, that would reduce carbon deposits.
